The production of distillates in the Frauenwörth Abbey, the oldest continuing women's monastery in Germany (founded in 782), probably dates back to the 14th century.
After the years of secularization, bitters, herbal liqueurs and “essence of life” were produced on a small scale in the monastery pharmacy. The growing demand led to the monastery winery being re-established in 1907 and the long tradition of Chiemsee products being continued.
